How Do Water Treatment Systems Work?

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Bacteria, toxic chemicals, and heavy metals often pollute our natural sources . They expose people to serious diseases and in the long term put them at risk for such serious health conditions as cancer and liver damage. Today, just about every water source is contaminated so governments have to disinfect the water before they reach the people’s faucets. However, chemicals used to clean water for human use can be harmful to human health. As well, governments determine certain level of specific contaminants that are allowed to be in the water which means drinking water is not pure and healthy. Whether or not any of these impurities are harmful depends on the nature and the amount of the impurities, the levels permitted for each, and the end use of the water. A good water filtration system is the only way to ensure the quality and safety of your drinking water.

Water treatment systems normally use one or a combination of the following methods: Disinfection methods (Ultraviolet Light, Chlorination, and more), Filtration such as activated carbon filters, Reverse Osmosis, Distillation, and Deionization (water softeners). Deionization involves the removal of dissolved substances in ionic form. The hard water is pushed through a tank containing an exchange resin. Sodium on the exchange resin replaces the hardness minerals. The system removes calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and other heavy metals which is why it is also called demineralization.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) involves the uses of low-pressure mercury arc lamps that produce ultraviolet light containing germicidal elements. The radiation kills or deactivates the pathogens. Bacteria are killed with relatively low amounts of radiation, but cysts and worms are not affected and viruses are more resistant. The water color and turbidity and can interfere with the transmitting of ultraviolet energy and may reduce efficiency.

Filtration systems include activated carbon filters, mechanical filters, neutralizing filters, and oxidizing filters. These systems are effective and an easy way to eliminate a variety of contaminants. Mechanical filters (microfiltration) remove suspended substances from water using a filter that captures the material such as organic material. Filters are normally screening material such as fiber, fabric, ceramic or another type of screening material. As well, mechanical filters can be cartridge units that are mounted on a tap, or even water tank units which treat an entire home water supply.

Activated carbon filters absorb impurities as they pass through a carbon cartridge. They are normally used to get rid of unpleasant odours, tastes, residual chlorine, and organic compounds. Carbon filters can also remove hazardous contaminants such as radon gas, dissolved organic chemicals, and trihalomethanes.

Reverse osmosis pressurizes and sends impure water through a semi-permeable membrane. The process removes about 90% of mineral and biological contaminants such as metals, salts, minerals, microorganisms, and other organic chemicals. Reverse osmosis, Deionization, and Distillation cause the direct removal of impurities from water.

Before buying a water treatment system, it is important to test your water to find out the type of treatment that you need. As well, there are water systems that contain technology from various water treatment methods thereby removing a whole host of contaminants. These types of water systems are popular as they produce very clean and great tasting drinking water.

How Whirlpool Water Filters Work – Explanation of Good Taste Water

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Scientific research reveals that public h2o all over the United States Of America is certainly sadly becoming more and more harmful to consume. Due to this fact, numerous individuals are now searching trustworthy alternatives to their consumable water. The use of bottled water could be safe and sound nonetheless is certainly expensive, and quite a few people today are seeking water treatment units to give them all with safe pure fresh water. However, many individuals are mixed up with the several approaches and distinct techniques implemented in all those systems. Before buying, discover and be aware of what on earth you will would need. Else, most people can get scammed in to something that might take care of water problems their drinking water never ever possessed. Whirlpool, sells a significant wide range of water solutions and products, which includes a variety of pou and poe systems. Units that will provide quality h2o filtering, and tend to be capable of supplying a family with enough healthy, pure water to drink continuously.

Generally there usually are ample approaches connected with filtering h2o, including R.O. membrane filtration strategies. Some of these methods would pressure dirty water via a bunch of pre filtration units and permeable unique membranes, and are separating unwanted particles from the handled drinking h2o. Typically the two technologies are essentially exactly the same, nonetheless often vary because reverse osmosis (r.o.) normally is dependent upon the source of the incoming water amount of pressure, whilst the membrane filtration units are likely to be energized accompanied by a booster pump.

Reverse osmosis is known for a wide variety of commercialized , industrial, and medical installations, and it is heavily used in home h2o purification. Unlike some similar techniques of water softening, RO is based on on the quality of the water and amount of pressure of the incoming water supply to run the system.

Standard water appliances come in quite a few different forms, for example large filtration models and point of use purifiers. Filters for water can be obtained in a wide assortment of models and brands, like (gac) activated carbons water filters, metallic alloy filter devices, and reverse osmosis membranes systems. A Water purifier generally will work by means of pressuring water all through the filter, and thus splitting up particular variations of contaminants and organisms from the purified, dependent on its filtration size pore evaluation.

Drinking water treatment units are available in many different models. Prior to buying, discover and be aware of what on earth you would need. Otherwise, an individual may get conned towards something which will deal with conditions their home drinking water never possessed.

What is the Importance of Water Purification Systems?

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Water is a vital resource that is used everyday for a variety of purposes. We use water for drinking, washing and bathing, washing our clothes, and so much more. Because water is such an indispensable resource, it is imperative that the water we use is clean and safe. Unfortunately, more water sources are becoming contaminated with toxic metals, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other substances that can harm people. According to the Environmental Working Group, “there can be as many as 315 pollutants in tap water.” As well, government guidelines for allowing specific levels of contaminants in water does not always mean the water is safe, particularly when consumed over a period of many years.

The safety of water is important for all of us; however there are specific groups of people who can be harmed more easily by poor quality water. For instance, the elderly, children, infants, and people who have an illness such as those with a compromised immune system, can be harmed by contaminated water. As well as drinking the water, pollutants in the water can be absorbed into the skin or inhaled such as when having a hot shower. The chemicals in the water can also cause skin irritations. Water purifiers make water safer to drink, air safer to breathe, and there will not be any chemicals absorbed in the skin.

Not only can pollutants be harmful to humans, but when in drinking water, it can have an unpleasant taste, odor, and appearance. When washing our clothes, contaminated water can makes the clothes even dirtier. Using a water purifying system can improve the quality, appearance, and health of tap water by removing harmful substances from the drinking water. When people choose to use a water purification system, they do so to protect themselves and their family from potentially harmful elements.

If you have a well or are concerned about the amount of chemicals being used to treat water such as chlorine which can increase the risk of such diseases as cancer, a water purification system may be the right health solution to protect you, your family, and even your pets. Water purifiers come in a variety of types and the prices will vary so you should be able to find the right system that meets your budget. However, sometimes cheaper purifiers are not always as effective, so you should always check to see what the manufacturer says about the efficiency of the water purifier and what substances the system will remove. Some water purifiers are better than others and some purifiers will remove only certain contaminants. It is always helpful to get a water purifier that removes every type of contaminant. When choosing a water purification system, health and safety should be the most important factors taken into consideration.

When searching for a water purifier, it important to learn about the quality and steps used by the water purifier so that you will know what contaminants will be removed from the water. For instance, activated carbon removes chlorine, chemicals, and disinfection byproducts. Ionizers remove lead and other metallic contaminants, selective filtration water purifiers remove bacteria…etc. It is important to get the water purifier that offers the most health protection. No matter what water purification systems you use, it is important to drink clean uncontaminated water.

Mr.Rooter Plumbing offers high quality water filtration systems and water purification systems. Immediate response, availability 24/7 and no overtime charges are standard with the plumbing experts at Mr.Rooter Plumbing.

Non-Chemical Solutions For Water Holding Tanks

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

It has become common in Texas, Georgia, Arizona and most recently in California and Florida for holding tanks to offer reserve water in the event of drought or simply to give large homes a reserve of water. To keep the reserve water in place these tanks are typically five thousand gallons or larger and they involve re-pressurization pumps and level switch accessories.

The concerns over water quality and water treatment strategies are the same as those found in developing countries where water is typically delivered by truck 2 to 3 times per week and stored in under ground or above ground holding tanks until it is used in 60 person housing units. These units have no plumbing infrastructure and the water will begin to grow algae, bacteria and mold in most cases just like it would in upscale single family American residences.

A novel approach to treating this stagnant water in holding tanks has now been tried and tested. Originating with the 3 week Apollo moon missions from the late 1960’s, the process of copper ionization has been successfully employed. Electrolysis is utilized to generate low-level copper in the holding tanks. This copper has been proven to stunt the growth of plant life and to literally kill ecoli, coliform and the dangerous pseudomonas bacteria. In sites observed ranging from 1,000 to 33,000 gallons, starting with applications from late 1990’s, water has been shown to retain its freshness for weeks. In the 33,000 gallon application in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, an additional twist was added. Marginal well water flow was supplemented with water from a storm water pond. To address this added treatment requirement, pre-filtration and oxygenation was added to the system to treat cedar tannins and other turbidity with the water.

This trial site, which also serves a movie production site for one of Hollywood’s premier producer /directors, has also proven that it can stand-up to the added challenge of requiring no water for days at a time and peak, heavy demand for two to three weeks straight. “The application has proved so successful that the producer has actually had the process replicated the process in Beverly Hill and at his new set in Maui,” said Joe Cantin, the technical sales person for his account.

In addition to the low level copper ion and oxygenation put in the water, specific filtration strategies and EPA/ETL lab water analysis is included with the equipment. “We change the calcium from the scaling carbonate form to a soluble calcium bicarbonate, in essence giving the customer a non-salt water softener,” Cantin added. Equipment costs installed range from $6,000 on the 1,000 to 5,000 gallon sites to as much as $20,000 on the 33,000 gallon application. “We’ll do a movie set or a high density housing project for 60 people for the same money, it’s sort of ironic,” says Cantin.

No Salt, Non RO Solutions For Arsenic In Water

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Ask yourself this, What do Cambridge, Minnesota, Lewiston, Idaho, River, Arizona and Butte, Montana have in common? All of their ground water contains high levels of arsenic, the arsenic has been discovered in both commercial and residential wells alike. Regulators and homeowners have placed the well water in these areas under intense microscopes. Arsenic is produced as a natural by product of mining and other industrial practices. EPA and ETL labs classify arsenic into two categories for water treatment purposes: A3 or A5. These classifications can lead to either the success or failure of a water treatment strategy.

Prior to the 1990s, water treatment approaches were largely limited when arsenic was present. A three tank well water filter system, followed by a whole-house, reverse osmosis system and, finally, a water softener was the typical treatment option, according to Mike Dewar, a regional sales manager at a water treatment company. “We wasted far more water than we treated.” Things started to change in 1999 with the introduction of ion exchange resins. However, with a required reservoir of salt, identical to a water softener, shower and drinking water was still and issue and many customers stuck with the whole house, RO systems in order to avoid the unpalatably, salty water.

Reverse Osmosis systems presented an additional dangerous problem. With maintenance costs high with the requirement to clean or replace RO membranes, many customers delayed or avoided maintenance. However, in avoiding $1,000 to $2,000 in yearly costs, homeowners were putting they and their families at risk. The arsenic initially accumulated in the membranes and then very quickly became part of the water supply. Joe Cantin, a sales person at a regional sales company, tells a horrific tale of the dangers of forestalling maintenance when arsenic is present in source water. “We had one customer that customer ignored our annual change out of the membranes advice. He later and found that arsenic levels in the bloodstreams of his two children each exceeded 1 part per trillion arsenic.” Thankfully, although they each endured expensive blood chelation therapy, they were both alright.

Today it is required to have an EPA 150 item water analysis from Watercheck in Ypsilanti, Michigan to identify contaminants that endanger the health of humans and to confirm the maintenance requirements of the systems used. These tests can be accomplished in 15 minutes and are recommended to be done every other month. On top of arsenic, look for and be concerned with ecoli bacteria, MTBE, lead and around 80 other VOC’s (volatile organic chemicals) which usually go unnoticed and untreated with standard water treatment equipment such as water softeners and under the sink reverse osmosis and iron filter systems.

The primary technology involves natural oxygen and copper ionization with a set of simple anode chambers driven by DC voltage electrolysis. The primary benefit with the ionization and oxygenation system is that calcium and iron are addressed without the use of salt or chemical. The system converts calcium carbonate (CACO3) to calcium bicarbonate (CA2H(CO3)) which gives homeowners all of the benefits of water softeners and iron filters without the negatives.

These systems are available to serve a variety of commercial and consumer applications. They can operate with flow rates ranging from 5 to 400 GPM, for municipal, well and cistern water. Each system includes the initial water test kit and are quoted, in most instances, with all included equipment. Dewar notes,” those customers with arsenic in their source water much purchase semi-annual after-tests to ensure arsenic is not present.”

Softening The Minerals, Not The Water

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Untreated hard water will result in lousy laundry, spotted dishware and no soap results in the shower. In addition, calcium build up will ruin the fixtures, shorten appliance life and ultimately ruin the plumbing in the home. Everyone with hard water knows these issues, few understand there are non-salt options.

A debate has raged for more than fifty years as to who invented water softening. In one camp, Bill Culligan, in the other a fellow Minnesota-based company, Lindsey Miracle water, the predecessor to ECO Water. Water softening is the ion exchange of sodium for calcium resulting in no calcium in the water and some level of sodium Regardless of where the credit is placed, the proliferation of water softening as a treatment option, has fueled a new debate: Is the process environmentally sound. Brine, a byproduct discharged as part of the water softening process, has come under increased scrutiny over the last twenty years. Large county municipal districts such as Los Angeles County and Livingston County in Michigan, in addition to many smaller municipalities, have issued discharge regulations with respect to chloride. These efforts have been supported by studies at the Mayo Clinic and the decision to remove calcium hardness itself by the Finnish government. Other have concluded that sodium, and even un-softened water, can pose health risks for circulatory systems in the areas of blood pressure and stroke.

People’s health and environmental awareness along with the internet as a research tool, have drawn more consumers to seek a non-salt water treatment option. Ionization and oxygenation systems use a natural oxygen and ionic copper to revert calcium carbonate (CACO3) to calcium bicarbonate (CA2H(CO3)). Iron is oxidized by the oxygen allowing a filter to remove the iron from the water without the use of chemicals or salt, a major break through in well water treatment. “I think Yahoo science and Stanford University legitimized these systems by defining calcium bicarbonate in 2001,” said Mike Dewar, a regional sales manager in the water treatment industry. “We still fight some chemical engineers and professors who refuse to believe bicarbonate calcium exists. They got their PHD’s before 1980,” Dewar continued.

New wells in Canada are today required to under-go bicarbonate testing and EPA approved methods of testing in the United States are now available to show that the hardness of water can be temporary or permanent. Bicarbonate testing is done by water industry leaders such as Culligan Labs in Los Angeles, California and Watercheck in Cleveland, Ohio. Bicarbonate calcium leaves a powdery residue not hard scale and is cleaned up without the use of chemicals. The root electrolysis used in these ionization and oxygenation systems was originally used by NASA during the Apollo Space Program and developed by 3M. The low level copper residual, ionization, is healthy to humans but deadly to mold and bacteria. The oxygenation was used as scale control in the Apollo cooling systems.

“The other major benefit is the residual bacteria control, which becomes important if you filter out the chlorine of city water or recognize a high percentage of wells develop Coliform through the natural ecosystem,” Dewar continued.

Oxygenation and Ionization Maximize Plant Growth

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Scott Wagner was ready to pay roughly two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in 2004 for a reverse osmosis water treatment system to treat the problematic well water at his Flower growing business in Ham Lake, Minnesota but he was not ready to take on the additional annual operating cost in salt, increased electricity needs and replacement membranes for the new system. Wagner was also concerned about the impact this new system would have on the environment.

“Our problematic well water is 3 parts iron and 2 parts manganese and the ionization and oxygenation on our irrigation system has proven to be a very cost effective solution,” claims Scott Wagner. Visitors of the greenhouse are often told by employees that the water is so good they actually bring it home in 5 gallon buckets for bathing and drinking. The problematic well water was also over 20 grains in hardness (350 ppm of carbonate calcium) and the flow rates often exceeded 60 GPM. Wagner is now spending about a thousand dollars a year on operating costs such as media change out and anode replacement on his 6 filter tank configuration. His planet friendly system also conserves water and uses less electricity then a comparative reverse osmosis system.

The green house system features six Pentair 2850 1-1/2″ water valves that communicate with the electronic control devices. While Pentair recommends valve rebuilds every three years for growers operating in more temperate climates, Wagner, with Minnesota’s five-month growing season, has found the valves to have performed without issue for five years..

On the other side of the Minneapolis, MN market, Apple Valley, is the growing operation of Pahls Nursery which has treated all of its growing water with oxygenation and ionization since early 2000. Pahl nurseries have purchased two irrigation systems as the growing operation has expanded. Gary Pahl, President, also points out his second “hex” (six tank 60 GPM) ionization and oxygenation system has six seasons of firm irrigation operation without a maintenance event or filter/valve update. “We knew when we purchased our second ionization and oxygenation irrigation system for our expanded operation in 2003 this was both the fiscally and environmentally responsible approach to premium water,” Pahl emphasized.

The research also makes the case for the ionization/oxygenation combination for plant growth. Seed germination studies have quantified faster and higher rates with ionized and oxygenated water. With the oxygenation and ionization levels measurable in the water, soil moisture levels have remained at elevated levels. The retail landscape community has recently added “Oxygenation” product lines, to go with the huge trend towards ecological methods, have recently been added by the retail landscape trade. Finally, ionization and oxygenation is a zero brine, zero chloride discharge technology which wastes no energy “double pumping” reverse osmosis water, discharges no brine or chloride to the groundwater, and saves 35-50% of the usually discharged water.

ECOsmarte has non-salt, non-chemical water technology installed in all 50 US states & 100 countries. In 2010 ECOsmarte received the Water Quality Association’s GOLD SEAL designation for its municipal whole house water systems.

Preventing Bacteria and Scale in 2 Miles of Pipe Distribution

Monday, January 24th, 2011

When Glen Hyde was developing his airport hanger loft condos in 2001, he knew that his 50 grain hard Texas well water would scale the pipe in the 2 mile water distribution system, particularly if he was chlorinating the water as the state of Texas had required. Further, softening the water would add operating expenses for this private airport and labor requirements not available when he was required to fly to a client’s plane and in some cases rebuild a jet engine over a number of days. Hyde also did not believe the brine discharge or “soapy” shower water was very desirable for his property owners.

Hyde’s first step was to attend the state of Texas courses in order to get himself certified as a water district operator, a requirement in numerous states when a community well serves more than six residences. Secondly, Hyde needed an “Environmental Technology” application for his hybrid system.

Certified Water District Operator Glen Hyde knew that if chlorine was required in his two inch, two mile distribution network that he would shortly have flow problems due to scale and softening. This was prohibitively expensive in terms of maintenance and time.

Hyde knew the challenge was to get bicarbonate calcium to prevent scale build up across the 2 miles the PVC distribution system ran. Hyde figured that the ionization levels from his water treatment strategy could be measured at the furthest point from the point of entry to confirm viable scale and bacteria control. He also knew he needed Texas approval to pellet chlorinate at the well, remove all of the chlorine with a granular activated carbon tower (90 GPM) and to insert an electronic ionization and oxygenation system post GAC filter and in line.

As an early learner of carbonate calcium (CACO3) Vs. bicarbonate CA2H (CO3) and had only laundry with no automatic dishwashers in his development of 1 bedroom lofts, 160 total. A Watercheck analysis concluded that nearly off his water hardness was calcium and led him to purchasing all of the required valves and filters from the regional Culligan distributor. 1.0 ppm is the measured amount of chlorine before the GAC filter, the chlorine measures ZERO after the filter and the ionization residual is measured at .1 ppm 2 miles from the treatment point at the furthest controlled faucet on the system.

None of the chlorine gets into the distribution network nor into the airport condominiums and the flower mound hangers inevitably receive the final benefit of both the chlorine and the copper ionization for microbe control. Hyde claims this is what the customers like the most.

The Most Important Facts About Domestic Water Softeners

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Hard water is actually a problem generally in most of the homes, all over the world. Though, experiencing hard water problem depends on your location you live, but is very much prevalent. Domestic water softener systems are created for resolving this trouble by altering the composition of the water.

Water usually holds numerous different matters not just merely H2O. While travelling through the pipes it picks up large number of various materials over and above those had been in it. Fundamentally, a great deal of minerals, calcium, magnesium, heavy metals, salinities, iron and further pollutants can be found in the drinking water. To make it simple, hard water means water containing a lot of Ca and Mg.

To make it clear, why we worry about water hardness is quite straightforward. Exactly, like in other cases, the reason is money, to be precise saving you money. If your house has no water softener system installation in it, then keeping it up is likely to cost you more at the moment. Present minerals are depositing in the pipings of your house, also in your household appliances. By not applying water softener, you are allowing hard water minerals to clog the pipes and causing harm to your dishwasher, hot water tank, washing machine, costing you more in the end.

At this point you probably recognised the importance of having a domestic water softener system put in. There could possibly be thousands of offers online and offline. To name two or three very well known also really efficient water softener brands: Twin Tec, Rainsoft, Fleck, Culligan, Kinetico water softener system. Each one of these are meant to give soft water the whole day as they are whole house water softener systems.

Calgon tablets and powder are worth to note too, as they do the work directly, though they are not systems but additives. Using Calgon jointly with the soap or cleaning agent, not only safeguards your washer or dish washing machine, but increases the effectiveness of the soap and makes textiles soft.

When there is a domestic water softener installation in your house providing the whole family with soft water, you have to think about maintenance. There is just a couple of simple things you need to think about to preserve its good condition. In case of salt-based systems you need to check the water softener salt regularly and refill if needed. I’m not giving you a general information on that, take a look at the user’s guide. Never try to figure it out on your own, see the instructions of your specific system.

Last but not least, I have to mention one more thing regarding to water treatment systems. Having soft water coming from the tap is not everything you need to think of, when it comes to health and safety. Softening alone might not be enough to give safe drinking water to your children. In some locations, there are other contaminations in the drinking water than simply calcium ions. Also bacteria, and harmful chemicals could be left in the water after softening. This is where a water purification systems, water filters come into the picture. You may want to profoundly scrutinize any offer, whether it includes a water filter as well before buying in.

I am hoping this information helps you to consider the alternatives, and aids you with making a wise decision, best suited for your home and your family’s needs. Don’t forget, having a domestic water softener system put in is a clever investment. Not only you will be paying less for repairs and soap, but you will save yourself a lot of trouble as well.
