People walk into your home all the time and judge you based on the clutter you don’t even see. The first step to setting yourself free of clutter is being able to actually see it. There are “clutter zones” in your home that collect clutter like a magnet. Your countertops in the kitchen, at the bottom of the stares, your purse, your desk and even your wallet. These are all areas that naturally collect clutter like a magnet is attracted to metal. But for some reason it’s hard for most “cluttery” people to even SEE the mess in the first place.

METHODS

If you’re searching the Internet for an easy way to DeClutter, you’re probably not going to find it. This is because all people write about is specific methods and techniques and nothing else. You need more than this! Anyone can write about various techniques that have worked for THEM but to permanently change your cluttersome ways, you’ll need to first change your mindset and your bad clutter habits.

Technique is important, don’t get me wrong. Before you start DeCluttering you need to know what the heck you’re doing first. “Box & Banish” is one such method. It’s absolutely fantastic!

It’s REALLY easy: Get a box or a bag and put everything in it, working section by section. That means clearing off the countertops if you’re doing the kitchen, putting everything in a big box. Once you have completed a section and everything is in the box, pick each item up and ask yourself what it is, why it’s there and what purpose it fulfills. The important thing to remember here is that you cannot put the item down until you have answered these questions and have taken the appropriate action.

HABITS

The key to solid habit formation is to take it slow. It’s said that it takes 30 days before a habit becomes routine. So you want to make one small change at a time. Example: You want a solid evening routine. Make a list of some small things you will do each evening, an hour before bed. So lets say your list is to pick out an outfit to wear the following day, clean off the kitchen counters and organize your home office desk. That’s 3 simple things you need to stick with for 30 days before you move onto adding extra habits. Be patient, habit formation is directly related to time. If you jump the gun and try to change too many habits at once, you will burn out and fail.
