Options For Remote Housing For Temporary Purposes

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

An emerging market for remote housing for temporary purposes means that many companies are beginning to see the benefit to investing in their creation and marketing. The comforts of home in a small, sustainable shelter are especially attractive to a number of different types of people, especially those preparing for a devastating environmental or economical disaster to occur within their lifetimes.

The main attraction of these shelters is their sophisticated climate control capabilities. This includes both heating and air conditioning. For colder climates, heating can keep occupants comfortable even as a blizzard rages outside, while the intense rays of the sun can be blocked by the profuse administration of cooled air around the premises. Staying within the bunker becomes a valuable and trusted part of surviving an emergency weather situation.

There are many different types of model shelters that can be purchased by those who desire one. Most have rapid assembly as the number one priority, usually under two hours or so, so that when disaster hits there is no time wasted gathering useless supplies for the shelter. The quick assembly also means that inhabitants can focus on their personal safety rather than the integrity of their shelter.

Airtight design in the doors, walls, and windows prevents dangerous gases or fumes from entering the home. Air conditioning and purifiers continuously regulate the air and dispose of any harmful elements that could harm the occupants. Allergenic and carcinogenic compounds can all be erased from the air that enters the shelter from the outside with the presence of these humidifiers.

Solar and wind energy are both used to power the home. In the event of a disaster, the site would remain self-sufficient enough to keep itself and its accessories running for the occupants, who may not wish to leave the area for an extended period of time.

There are many personal customization options available to those who wish to choose another source or backup source of power for their shelter.

The new market for remote housing for temporary purposes means that there is still a lot of research and implementation of ideas into these models of homes. For those desiring a place of solace during an emergency, these can be the best option that retains the comforts of home with the safety of a well-designed, quick assembly shelter. Another demographic are those that study wildlife and desire a clean, hospitable area to conduct their research from within a shelter.

Garden Grow Light Bulbs Are An Excellent Choice For Indoor Plants

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Indoor garden grow light bulbs are a necessity when you want your plants to do great inside your home. There are numerous sources of energy for you to use and your choice depends on your space and your imagination.

Houseplants may look great when they are highlighted by an incandescent source, but these will not prosper. These bulbs may produce a lot of heat but not the correct color source to give plants what they need to thrive. They also get so hot that the edges of the leaves could turn brown if the source is too close to the leaves.

The same incandescent filament that is in a regular lamp acts differently when placed in a spotlight will be good for most tropical plants that do not reach very high, or herbs. You can get these lights in a clamp on fixture to attach directly to your stand.

When you have different plants in your home you also have several choices of bulbs that you can use to help them thrive. The fluorescent lighting offered for your indoor gardening needs comes in a variety of different colors of the spectrum offering different plants their certain requirements. Currently they are all horizontal in shape which means that you must have them room for a big plant stand.

There are other hi intensity garden grow light bulbs that are up to five-hundred percent stronger than the incandescent ones but they do not have the danger off burning any foliage. These lights come highly recommended for fruit and vegetable producing plants and should give you the results that you are looking for.

Low growing plants do well when you use a metal halide lighting system that is also said to give plants the greatest range of color. When considering your indoor plant area, space is a major concern. Before you decide on what type of garden grow light bulb decide on the plants you want to raise and the space you can devote to them.

Impressive Little Lantern

Monday, April 9th, 2012

This is a very bright, very compact lantern with decent battery life. Don’t let the size fool you! Cheap plastic, probably would break if dropped. They say nothing about the emergency strobe mode that this light has.

It isn’t like you need to change batteries very often! I’ve noticed no drain at all on the battery regarding the LED. It has two light levels, with the lowest being more than enough to read by comfortably.

It really is bright enough to read by, and the price is a third what something giving this much light for as long as this does would have cost in the past. When I purchased them I intended to use them hanging from a hook with the lantern handle, but once I discovered I could pop off the diffuser (pretty much the top half of the lantern) and hang it from the hidden hook on the bottom of the lantern, I’ve almost exclusively used it this way. What a great thing it is! When I received the item I was pleasantly surprised by its quality and sturdiness.

Using 10ah rechargeables in it, it draws 1.1 amps on high, and 0.48 amps on low. The lantern does you no good if you can’t find it in the dark. For those that are bothered by the glare, here is a simple solution–turn the lantern upside down! I showed my neighbor, and now she has to have one too! I bought this lantern to light a dark closet that was far from an outlet.

I will be buying a few more to replace my Coleman XPS lanterns, which pale in comparison to the size, weight, brightness and durability of the Rayovac.

You will not regret it. It seems very robust and will be very useful for campers. I went over to check it out and inspect it, and then kept it on the back of my mind.

I am very impressed, this Rayovac lantern is well built. If you’re also a camper, then this is a no-brainer. Unlike some reviewers, I had no problem inserting the batteries. What else can I say?

It is very bright, amazingly so for its small size. I just wish I had had two, one for outside and one for the tent! It was accidentally left turned on in “Energy Saver Mode”, and 17 days later it was still working, and was still bright enough to light up the whole fish house at a ‘usable’ (although dimmer than desired) level.

Using Decorative Lights to Improve Your Home Decor

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

A properly installed decorative lighting system can be the cherry on the top of an otherwise stunning house. An already stylish decor can be greatly enhanced with the right decorative lighting touches. Drab exteriors can also be transformed by adding a few decorative lights. Homeowners shopping for decorative lighting will want to keep their eyes open for additional accessories such as light panels and fluorescent light diffusers. Some of these simple accessories can make all the difference in the world.

Properly installed decorative lighting can highlight the best elements of a room and bring out the colours of the wall and carpets. Many homeowners are unfortunately unaware of how to get the best use out of their newly purchased decorative lighting systems, and often miss out on the benefits it can bring them.

Here are some easy to follow decorative lighting installation tips that anyone can use to improve the look of their homes:

* The humble candle is the oldest and most well known form of decorative light. Candles in large areas like living and dining rooms will add a nice romantic touch. A quick and easy way to install candles is to cluster same sized candlesticks around a table. Alternatively, using candlesticks of different heights can also add a nice decorative flourish.

* Backlighting is an artful way to illuminate a particular feature in a room. Many homeowners choose backlights to bring attention to works of art or other ornamental fixtures.

* Cord lights are a cheap and easy decorative lighting solution that can be used in hard to reach places like bookshelves, racks, and staircases. Energy efficient and versatile, cord lights can be used in many different areas of the house.

* Putting a lighting source behind wall mounted handicrafts is another cheap and cheerful way to achieve decorative lighting. Light given off by such a setup is playfully scattered throughout the room.

* Many different forms of decorative lighting fall under the banner of kinetic lights. These range from modern LED light modules to fibre optic light arrays and retro styled lava lamps. Kinetic lights are capable of displaying several different colours at once and can make the shadows in a room dance and morph. The resulting in psychedelic effect is highly sought after by some homeowners.

* Internal water fountains are a good match for various ambient lighting systems. Table fountains and wall-mounted water-falls often feature a decorative lighting as part of their overall aesthetic. The interaction of light and water creates a sense of tranquillity and peace.

* A good place to install decorative lights is in dark areas of the house that do not normally receive much illumination. Darkened nooks and alcoves are great candidates for wall lighting fixtures or free standing floor lights, while staircases can be easily illuminated by cord lights.

Decorative lighting is all about self expression and creativity. Homeowners thinking of installing decorative lighting fixtures should be aware that it is an art and not a science. What works well for one room may not work for another. It is recommended that homeowners try out several different decorative lighting solutions to see what works best.

Lamps through the ages

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

The very first lamps are thought to have been used as early as the 10th millennium BC, making use of natural materials like shells and stones, with moss or another flammable material burnt inside. Following this, simple man-made lamps began to appear, made from pottery or metal for example.

The earliest lamps were fashioned in a bowl shape, but over the years this began to change to a more enclosed shape, becoming the spout type seen for example in the Byzantine era. Traditional oil lamps like these were common right up until the 18th century, when the Argand lamp, a more efficient cyclindrical design, was patented by Aime Argand. These were the design of choice in the West until the 1850s, when paraffin lamps became popular instead.

The idea of using gas as a light source was first brought about by Scottish engineer William Murdoch, He began experimenting with various gases in the 1790s, and lit his own house in Cornwall using coal gas in 1792. This form of lighting became very popular especially for street lamps- Paris, for example, adopted street gas lighting in 1820.

Electric lights, like we use today in our homes, didn’t come into existence until the early 1800s, when English inventor Sir Humphrey Davy created the first ‘arc lamp’ using an electric arc to produce light. Incandescent lights, where a filament is heated to produce light, were developed by Scotsman James Bowham Lindsay in the 1830s. This technique is still used in the light bulbs we recognize today.

Nowadays, there are newer and newer lights reaching the mass market all the time, such as fluorescent lights and LEDs. However, more traditional lamps have not lost their place and are still seen to this day. Gas lamps are still widely used for camping, for instance, while ancient style oil burners are used in the Hindu celebration Diwali.

Contemporary Bathroom Light Fixtures

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Uniformity is a vital rule of thumb in design. Homes will look better if they stick to a style all throughout the rooms rather than overload the senses with clashing forms. This does not mean that everything should look the same but that certain elements are repeated for continuity. This may sometimes prove to be difficult to implement in some areas like the bathroom where functionality and practicality reign supreme. Of all the styles that may be selected, it is contemporary design that is most suited for the bathroom as it promotes a clean, uncluttered look that makes the small space seem bigger that it actually is. If made the right way, this type of design can definitely make the bathroom transcend its lowly function and feel like a haven for relaxation.

Most homeowners make use of white linens, textured white rugs and as well as white flowers in order to enhance the contemporary look of the bathroom. However, using contemporary bathroom light fixtures is still the best way to bring out the contemporary appeal of the room. Because of this, it is important for homeowners to know the three different types of lighting when it comes to selecting a good contemporary lighting fixture. These lighting types include the accent, the ambient and as well as the task specific. All these types must be provided perfectly into the room in order to create and maintain a particular style. Fortunately, incorporating all these types in order to provide adequate lighting is actually quite easy to do.

Apart from ambient lights, bathrooms also must have accent lights, as they are designed to deliver eye-pleasing visual effects, and illuminate/highlight particular areas of a bathroom or specific decorative elements within it. Contemporary-styled, recessed lights and track lights are two popular examples of accent lighting. For task lighting, the final option, install vertical light fixtures on both sides of the bathroom mirror. This will eliminate shadows when dressing up or grooming.

Bathroom light fixtures in contemporary concepts must possess streamlined designs. These generally include linear and geometric shapes. They are available in various materials, but buyers prefer light-reflective stainless steel and chrome, to wrought iron and bronze, as the latter two deliver a rather “fuzzy” look. Rectangular, square and linear-shaped lights are also preferred instead of oval and circular-shaped fixtures for the very same reason.

Owing to their soothing visual effect on shiny metal-made fixtures and the resultant contrast, frosted glass is also often used. Of course, to ensure that fixtures and all metal elements retain their sheen and original looks, regular maintenance is extremely essential. Scouring powders, like “Barkeep’s Friend”, are ideal for maintaining stainless steel and chrome. So, to keep those metallic surfaces as good as new make sure to clean them as often as you can.

Applying Good Lighting To Help Enrich Your Home

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

In this day and age, people are investing in a high-end remodel for their current home, instead of moving. Marble countertops, wood floors, handmade cabinetry – it’s all about expressing your individual personality. Unfortunately, the last thing that is on a person’s mind is the correct lighting. The costliest home improvement project in the world simply won’t look that great if you use unsightly fixtures and badly positioned lighting. With the proper lighting, you will alter a room from dull to fab at an affordable cost. When thinking about the lighting in your home, there are three principal categories that you should choose from: accent lights, ambient lighting, and task lighting. While these choices might seem obvious, a number of people still manage to destroy the room’s appearance with inappropriate lighting.

Task lighting is just as the name suggests: it is highly practical lighting, aimed for doing specific tasks such as writing or reading. In a work or study area, use both floor and desk lamps, positioned strategically This will considerably lessen strain on the eyes. In a kitchen, you could hang track lights above an island, or use lighting underneath the cabinets, brightening up the counter-tops. This is extremely handy for lighting up an area where you prepare food. In the bathroom, fixtures should be installed above or around a mirror, allowing you to see what you are doing when you put on make up or shave.

Accent lighting is used to highlight individual things in a room, and is normally quite imposing. Track lighting can be pointed in a certain direction to focus on an amazing piece of art on a wall or an imposing architectural feature. The lighting needs to be at least twice as bright as the ambient lights in the room, if you want to achieve the desired effect. In a kitchen, accent lighting can be used to throw light on an assortment of glassware or china in a glass-front cupboard. An additional benefit of accent lighting is its capacity to take attention away from ugly areas of a room, by moving the eye elsewhere.

General, or ambient lighting illuminates the entire room, offering the central source of light. It adds an even amount of light to the area without creating shadows. Ambient lighting tends to be a combination of ceiling fixtures and wall sconces. Many rooms serve double duty, for example, a kitchen can also be used as an eating area. While you will want a good amount of light while preparing food, you certainly wouldn’t want this when you are having a romantic dinner, so you should install dimmer switches for this kind of ambient lighting. Pendant lights work very well in this case.

Remember your home’s exterior! Exterior lighting has two different functions: to add beauty to the home, and for security. If your property is properly lit, a potential burglar will presume that someone is occupying the home, thus lessening the chance of a break-in. Walkways and driveways need to be well-lit, allowing people to make their way around the property in safety. Exterior lights will make a seating area and garden look extremely attractive, creating an inviting area for entertaining in the evening. Just like in your home’s interior, make use of accent lights to draw attention to certain aspects of your garden, for example a fountain or an uncommon tree or shrub.

To conclude, well thought out lighting can make all the difference in the world to an otherwise bland living space, turning it into a warm, inviting area. When you use a mixture of accent, ambient and task lighting, you spruce up any room in the home.
