Furniture Refinishing Easy To Do

What about that old table sitting in the garage, the one that was a steal at the thrift store several years ago. It has potential now, just as it did when it was purchased. That piece may have a few nicks and crannies, but wood filler works wonders. Bringing an article back to life is by no means an easy task, but furniture refinishing is fun and very fulfilling once the job is completed.

The main thing is to follow the directions on the manufacturers labels of all the products used. Have all tools needed at hand before beginning which will make the job much easier.

It is very important to work in a well ventilated area. Many people who do this type of work chose to use a chemical stripping agent to remove the old finish. This is a messy job, but often wins out over sanding. Even after using the stripper, it may still be necessary to sand certain areas. Follow the manufacturers directions precisely.

If an electric sander is available it is much easier than trying to do it by hand. Make sure the edges are not neglected while sanding. With this process it is not necessary to sand all the way to the wood finish, but a smooth surface is imperative.

Refinishing wicker or rattan is two of the easiest types of wood to work with. Other articles require more time and energy. In addition more products and tools are required to do a well deserved job.

Wipe the sanding dust away using a damp cloth. Fill in holes or nicks in the furniture with wood filler. Let dry and sand smooth. Wipe the article again with a damp cloth. A lint free cotton cloth works best.

Remove paint stripper according to label directions. Gingerly sand to avoid leaving gouges or digs in the wood. Clean the sanded area with a damp cloth to remove the sanding debris. Getting The Right Balance – Techniques For Good Compositions In Painting

Even with abstract painting, a good composition is essential for the finished painting to work. As in any aspect of the painting process, the approach to is what singles out the great painters. Often, good composition is the result of a natural process: when the painter creates a picture that is pleasing to the eye is is most probably down to the fact that the artist has ended up with a composition that conforms to traditional rules. However, there are a few technical tricks that make good composition easier to achieve.

Creating ‘lines of sight’

Look at a seemingly complicated painting by a great master, you’ll see that your eye is ‘led’ to a given point due to the careful arrangement of elements within the picture. A variety of tricks are used to create these ’sight lines’; areas of light or shade, physical objects, where colours change, even brushstrokes can be positioned so that they point the eye to the focal point of the picture. Another way of leading the eye is to put shapes within shapes, so that you confine the movement of the eye within a certain area. The best paintings are those that do not make it too obvious, moving the eye across the painting without the viewer knowing why.

Finding the ’sweet spot’: The golden section

In the 19th century, a theory of composition was discovered based on a mathematical relationship, this theory is known as ‘the golden section’. Basically, it relies on the division of a straight line into two unequal parts, so that the ratio of the smaller to the larger is equal to the ratio of the larger to the whole line. This theory approximates to the ratio of 5:8. Compositions that use it generally have a strong vertical that crosses a horizontal at the point described creating a visually pleasing balance.

Framing the view

This is not so much a technique for creating a composition but choosing the best area of the scene your looking at. A simple picture frame, a window mount or two ‘L’ shaped pieces of card that, when placed on top of each other, form a rectangle hole which will allow you to see the ideal section of your scene. All unwanted areas are masked out, so concentrating your attention the important elements. You can also use this technique, using the L shaped cards, to select the best section from a photograph.

A different point of view

When producing a picture we spend much of the time seeing it from one angle, straight on. If however, we look at our painting from a more unusual view point, we find it much easier to spot any errors in the composition. This can be done by looking at the painting through a mirror, turning the whole painting upside down or on it’s side. Anything that is out of place and doesn’t sit happily with the rest of the composition suddenly shouts out at us.
