Reduce Your Home’s Energy Costs With ICF Construction

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

ICF Construction, short for insulated concrete form or forms, is an insulation method that can save you considerable amounts of money on energy costs if you are building a new home. The concrete form resembles a hollow block, but is really a mold with insulation built in. Each insulated concrete form is ready to accept reinforced concrete as part of the building process. During building, concrete forms are stacked and filled up with concrete and reinforcing bar. As the process continues, the finished insulated concrete forms make walls that are as strong as any traditionally built wall, as well as insulated and complete with a vapor barrier. ICF construction is growing in popularity, with energy savings being one of the main reasons why.

The energy savings that are realized by using the insulated concrete form building method translate to both financial savings for the homeowner and a strong environmental impact for everyone involved. The superior insulation of ICF construction provides energy benefits in both hot and cold weather. Money is saved through lower heating and cooling bills for the homeowner, and money can be saved during construction because the builder can use smaller heating and cooling appliances to get the job done. Estimates say that houses that are built with insulated concrete forms will use 44 percent less energy for heating and 32 percent less energy for cooling than a traditionally built house. Depending on the area and size of the home that’s been built using concrete form, the savings could add up to several hundred dollars per year.

Aside from the financial benefits, the energy saving qualities of ICF construction is ecologically sound and a boost to “green” construction practices. Insulated concrete forms help the home to retain heat in the winter and keep the heat out in the summer. This means that heating and cooling appliances don’t have to be use as often, which is a boost to the environment. Natural heating and cooling is the goal of every “green” home building initiative, and using concrete form for the walls is one of the best ways to accomplish that in contemporary building.

The way the energy is used and distributed within the house is another energy-related benefit to using insulated concrete forms in a house. The concrete in ICF construction enables the form to smooth out big swings in temperature. The walls are actually able to give back some heat or cooling depending on what is necessary at the time to balance out the internal temperature.

If you’re thinking of doing major renovations to your home, or you’re building a new one, be sure to ask about ICF constructions and whether it’s a good choice for your project. Insulated concrete form may be the answer to your energy concerns if you’re into helping the environment, and if you want to save on your heating and cooling bills. Insulated concrete forms and ICF construction make sense for a variety of different reasons.

Uses And Safety Issues Of Concrete Grinding Tools

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Concrete grinding tools are powerful devices. Cement and pavement are very hard and require strong blades to make changes to them such as polishing or removing paint and other substances. These machines are also used to prepare the surface for resealing or for painting. Many different models are available to chose from that will fit the needs of most people requiring a tool of this type.

The blades that are attached to these devices have different grit blades, from fine to very coarse. When smoothing the surface of a driveway or other hard surfaces the blade is changed to a finer grit blade with each pass made. In this way, a very smooth result can be obtained.

Diamond and carbide are two types of blades available for these machines. The blade to be used for a given project must be chosen by the person who will be completing the job. Finer blades might not be a suitable choice when removing paint or other substances from a surface.

All cement products contain sand. When that substance is released in the air, as will happen when using a power tool on concrete, the operator of the machine will breathe it in if a respirator is not worn. That dust can cause long-term health problems in the operator or anyone else who breathes it. If enough is taken in, permanent lung damage can result.

Wet grinders are an option available. These machines eliminate dust by keeping a supply of water between the surface being ground and the blade itself. Some of these have a vinyl covering attached to them that encircles the blade and motor area. This effectively directs the dust away from the person operating the machine. Some have vacuums that include an attached waste catcher that achieves the same result.

The most popular machines is the angle grinder. It is handheld and powered by an electric motor. The device looks like a circular saw except that the blade spins horizontally rather than vertically along the motor. Others are powered by compressed air and have a hose that runs from an air compressor to the machine motor. There are also gas powered models available.

As with any tool, the person operating the machine should have experience and skill when operating the machine. This avoids a job being completed with a less than desired result and lessens the risk of injury to the operator. Some of these machines are set up so that a cart can be attached that allows the person operating the tool to push it from behind as the surface is being ground. Other models have the capability of running three blades at one time and, therefore, must be operated with care.

Concrete grinding tools can range in price from just over a hundred dollars into the thousands of dollars. Safety devices that attach to them can also be purchased at a reasonable price. These machines are, however, available for rental at most equipment stores. The rate for the rental is generally reasonable and is calculated on a per day basis. Renting a grinding tool might be more cost efficient than purchasing the tool, especially if it is not needed often or is only needed to complete a special project.

Nufinish’s line of concrete polishing pads and concrete polishing tools reduce the amount of steps required to produce stunning polished concrete, saving you time and money.

What Are Insulated Concrete Forms

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Making use of insulated concrete forms is a very simple method of construction that has many advantages compared to wood frame building. The structure is more robust and durable and has a higher degree of insulation. The technique is not very complicated and can be learned quickly too.

Lightweight panels are used to create the formwork for the walls of a building. Steel rebar is placed in the spaces for reinforcement and these are then filled with concrete. The panels are then left in place and create very good thermal and acoustic insulation. Channels can easily be cut into the softer insulating material to run electrical wire and plumbing.

Concrete has much better strength and durability than wood frame housing. It is a very quick and simple method of construction so it can cost as much as 40% less than other methods of building. This is because there are fewer steps to the construction process which saves on labor.

If the construction process is above grade it can be slightly more expensive. In the long run there will be lower costs for heating and cooling due to a higher degree of insulation so this more than makes up for the small additional cost. Because this type of building is more durable it will also have a higher resale value.

There are four different types of insulation that are commonly used. Lightweight panels can be made from polystyrene and polyurethane foam. These are easy to work with and have very good insulating properties. Polystyrene beads or wood fibers that are bonded with cement can also be used to create a more rigid panel. The panels are designed to interlock so that they are easily held in place and stay in place after construction.

After all the formwork has been put in place then it can be filled up with concrete. This can only be done in stages of one to feet in height at a time. Filling up more than that would put too much pressure on the soft panels and this would probably lead to a blowout near the bottom. Each stage should be agitated with a vibrator to make sure that it settles properly and that there are not air pockets and that honeycombing does not form.

When the concrete has set and all the electrical and plumbing channels have been laid then the walls can be finished with gypsum board or some kind of coating. On the outside walls you could also finish of with brickwork or siding. Polystyrene on outside walls should be treated with insecticide and waterproofed if it will be exposed to the elements at all.

There should be no gaps between the walls and floor slab or between any of the walls. This improves insulation but it also means that insects can’t get in. The walls are also not susceptible to boring insects like wood is. This means that there are many advantages of this type of construction over wood frame houses.

On the downside it is more difficult to do alterations and change doorways and windows. Once you have cut openings however they don’t normally require additional reinforcement. Overall insulated concrete forms constitute a better investment while at the same time creating a more comfortable home.

A Guided Review Of The Innovative Insulated Concrete Forms Building Technique

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Insulated concrete forms construction technique is being used to build more effective residential and commercial buildings. Homeowners and builders are opting for this construction method to build durable structures at a reduced cost. This technique reduces environmental degradation and offers long term savings due to reduced energy consumption levels.

This modern building method is popularly known as I. C. F and research shows that it is environmental and pocket friendly. The building blocks used are partly hollow and are made of cement, timber, plastic and form. After assembling the blocks the builders fill them with concrete and steel to make them strong and thick.

Financial success in the current world requires people who can live within their income and in order to make large savings. People are spending wisely and use of concrete form blocks can help homeowners to make long term savings. During humid conditions reduced use of timber is critical to reduce rotting and weakening of structures.

As urbanization and rural urban migration continue to increase, noise pollution has become a nuisance in many global cities. Houses built using this technology are quieter because concrete used in strengthening the structures acts as noise insulator. Compared to buildings that are traditionally built, insulated forms structures offer an environment conducive for commercial and residential buildings.

Little heating is required in houses built using this kind of blocks because the walls are thick. Thick walls are thermal insulators resulting to energy efficiency and less is spent on purchasing heaters and air conditioners. When this method is is compared with conventional building methods, there is an estimated ten percent increase in construction cost. But in contrast, long term savings on utility bills makes the houses financially viable.

Health issues must be given priority because consumers have become knowledgeable and keen to get more value for their money. Concrete form structures are known for having minimum air leaks making them comfortable and suited for allergic people. Dust particles hardly find their way into the building making them healthy and easy to clean.

Harsh climatic conditions and natural calamities like earthquakes have become more destructive than in any other time in recorded human history. Strong buildings are no longer an option but a must and using this method ensures durability and safety. Structures are markedly stronger when compared to conventionally constructed buildings.

The actual construction needs little labour and the time used is not as long as that used when traditional methods are applied. During actual construction, this method generates a small amount of waste and greenhouse gasses. This therefore is cost effective for developers and builders who are able to build more units in a short time.

The current and future use of modern building techniques holds the key to better infrastructure. As a home owner you can use this technique to get the best value for you money and a quality building. As a builder you can satisfy your customers need for cost effective buildings and keep your business growing.

The greatest requirement for the construction of a house using of insulated concrete forms is adhering to professional building practices. If poorly done, leakages may occur if the wall contains many small holes. But well built structures are comfortable, safer, environmental friendly, quiet and energy efficient thus the risk is more than worth it.

The leading supplier of insulated concrete forms helps builders create green buildings using energy efficient construction.

Concrete – Learn the Basics

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Concrete is a composite FOURTH class construction material, composed of cement (commonly Portland cement) and other cementious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate (generally a coarse aggregate made of gravel or crushed rocks such as limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand), water and chemical admixtures.

In evaluating concrete problems, one of the important decisions home inspectors must make is determining whether a problem is the result of conditions that have stabilized with a low chance of continuing future problems, or whether the conditions that caused the problem are such that there is a high probability that problems will continue or worsen.

Concrete additives have been used since Roman and Egyptian times, when it was discovered that adding volcanic ash to the mix allowed it to set under water. Similarly, the Romans knew that adding horse hair made concrete less liable to crack while it hardened and adding blood made it more frost-resistant.

Concrete, as the Romans knew it, was a new and revolutionary material. Laid in the shape of arches, vaults and domes, it quickly hardened into a rigid mass, free from many of the internal thrusts and strains that troubled the builders of similar structures in stone or brick. Modern structural concrete differs from Roman concrete in two important details. First, its mix consistency is fluid and homogeneous, allowing it to be poured into forms rather than requiring hand-layering together with the placement of aggregate, which, in Roman practice, often consisted of rubble. Second, integral reinforcing steel gives modern concrete assemblies great strength in tension, whereas Roman concrete could depend only upon the strength of the concrete bonding to resist tension.

Combining water with a cementitious material forms a cement paste by the process of hydration. The cement paste glues the aggregate together, fills voids within it and allows it to flow more freely. Less water in the cement paste will yield a stronger, more durable concrete; more water will give a freer-flowing concrete with a higher slump. Impure water used to make concrete can cause problems when setting or in causing premature failure of the structure. Hydration involves many different reactions, often occurring at the same time. As the reactions proceed, the products of the cement hydration process gradually bond together the individual sand and gravel particles and other components of the concrete, to form a solid mass.

Movement of the sub-grade, such as settling or heaving, can crack concrete. This may be caused by changes in soil volume in response to changes in the soil’s moisture content, or it may be caused by subsidence. Subsidence is settling that can have a number of causes. Sub-surface mining, extraction of natural gas, the dissolution of limestone or conditions related to groundwater can all cause soil to settle. An example is when groundwater dissolves the carbonate cement holding sandstone particles together, and then carries away the particles, creating a void in the soil.

The advantage to inspectors in being able to accurately determine the source of cracking is in understanding whether the condition that caused the cracking has stabilized so that it is no longer likely to cause additional cracking or encourage the propagation of existing cracks. Many cracks, like those caused by concrete shrinkage, are shallow cracks caused by forces that allow conditions to stabilize relatively quickly and do not lead to structural problems. Others, like those caused by soil subsidence or changes in soil volume, are caused by forces that can continue to affect concrete for a long time. This long-term instability can continue to cause serious structural problems over the long term.

Concrete floors have come back and become popular in a big way recently. This is because concrete floors are now available in a wide range of stylish designs. The age of the grey and boring concrete floors is completely gone. The many benefits of having concrete floors are rather apparent visually but there are structural benefits also.

Unlike other types of floors, concrete floors are strong and very durable. They do not warp, crack or split. With a well done concrete floor you need not worry about damage any more. With advancements in technology, it is now possible to decorate concrete floors by painting or staining them. You can customize your floor according to your preferences. No other type of floor provides the kind of sound insulation between floors that concrete floors give. Best of all you no longer need a carpet. Carpets hold all kinds of dirt and are a nuisance to keep clean. Concrete floors are easy to clean and maintain.

Concrete floors give you a wide selection of finishes to choose from. Polished Concrete involves actually polishing the concrete with the use of machines to grind down on the concrete to give it a smooth, shiny look. Polished floors usually give the impression of a waxed floor. They give a high quality finish that will give the room a glamorous and tasteful look. Concrete floors can be scored to make patterns or create the impression of tiles. For those with a liking for tiles Scored Concrete will provide you with the same look but with better quality. Stamping gives the concrete a textured look. It will give your floor an exotic and look. The finish is ideal if you want a wood, brick or stone appearance. It can basically mimic any floor type in the hands of a skilled concrete contractor.

Further effects are created when the above finishes undergo a process that is called Sealed Concrete. For this type, a seal is placed over the concrete to protect it from harmful elements and give it a clean stylish feel. The seals come in a variety of colors giving you a myriad of choices and looks for the final finish.

Getting the right contractor to do the job is the key in getting the perfect finish. Before hiring a contractor you should do a proper online search on the available types of floors and finishes. Discover The Many Benefits ICF Construction

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

ICF construction, or building with insulated concrete forms, is revolutionizing the building industry. While ICF may have been around for decades, it is the challenges of an uncertain future that make it an appealing choice of building material today. Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, have led to many areas upgrading their building codes. In addition to this, many homeowners express fears over rising energy costs. The insulated concrete form addresses these issues positively.

Concrete forms boast many benefits over traditional timber framed building techniques. Of particular interest to homeowners is that they can reduce energy costs and are incredibly sturdy. From the developer’s point of view they offer good design flexibility and can reduce building times. Add to this excellent fire resistance, improved sound insulation and a smattering of eco-credentials and the concrete form firmly establishes itself as the latest popular material of choice.

Rising energy costs are of concern to everybody. The use of insulated concrete forms can reduce home energy costs anywhere from thirty to ninety percent when compared to traditional timber framed houses. Unlike timber framed homes, they are airtight and provide continuous insulation. Additionally, the large thermal mass of the concrete enables it to absorb heat from daylight and radiate it into the home later on.

Concrete homes are incredibly sturdy in the face of extreme weather. Many have proven their ability to remain standing, unscathed, through hurricanes and tornadoes. They can also be designed not to topple during earthquakes. The uninterrupted shell of these buildings can increase their strength by as much as twenty times that of a wood framed building. The integrity of these structures cannot be compromised by termites or wood rot and are less susceptible to damp.

Insulated concrete forms are safe and are not manufactured from hazardous or toxic materials. Furthermore they afford homes far greater protection from fire. Even when subjected to temperatures of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit for over four hours the concrete shows no sign of structural damage. Whereas a timber framed building will facilitate the rapid spread of fire from one room to the next, concrete walls contain fire. This means occupants have more time to evacuate and firefighters can do their job more easily.

Concrete houses provide superior sound insulation. Many can boast a STC or sound transmission class rating that is four times higher than a comparable wood framed building. Noises that register beneath 125Hz on the sound spectrum, which are often the most irritating, are significantly abated.

It may be contentious to suggest that concrete is a more sustainable material than wood. Nevertheless, its value in reducing fossil fuel consumption through increased insulation should not be overlooked. There is also very little waste involved in the building process and concrete forms are recyclable.

Insulated Concrete Forms construction lends itself very well to modern design, enabling architects to incorporate curves and arches with ease. It is easy to apply virtually any exterior finish desired. It is a straightforward building technique allowing work to be completed on schedule. Although building costs are higher than conventional techniques, these are soon recovered through reduced fuel and maintenance costs.

Exterior House Wall Insulation Minimizes Home Heating Expense

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Many people find the winter months of year specifically tough and we don’t enjoy it either, so listed here are a few useful ideas to keep warm and toasty this winter. We all have to keep comfortable and sustain the ideal and comfortable temperature inside our residences, particularly if it’s throwing it down with rainfall or icy out of doors! The standard best heat for homes is just about 20 degrees. Exactly what measures may be taken to keep your house comfortable?

SHORT TERM

There are many low-cost and straightforward things that the average person can do in your home to help make the wintertime more manageable, to lessen any large household heating expenses and to retain good overall health as well as well being whilst the freezing climate is with all of us.

1. Wear additional garments! (including at bed time)

2. Take hot water bottles to your bed.

3. Use an electric powered cover inside the bed.

Make sure almost all draughts and wind flow entering a home is discovered: Entrance doors could be draught proofed with a strip of self adhesive foam, provided by hardware and Do-it-yourself merchants

Be sure all house windows are shut effectively and if you may have window shutters or window shades, confirm they are CLOSED.

Small bouts of training in the home can also increase circulation therefore making you really feel warmer. When in severe cold, these tips should be acted upon without fail.

Close off virtually any regions of your home, like a free bedroom or perhaps a cellar, which are not necessary to be utilized at this time of year, which means that the disposable heating will heat up a reduced part and will be more efficient (and less costly).

Get up thick, lined drapes above doors and glass windows, if you can, and block gaps under doors using anything to hand, the towel, a well used sheet and so forth.

Be sure to eat correctly and have very hot refreshments, particularly relevant to small children and also the elderly.

LONG TERM

Long term, it is advisable to not only make sure the actions above are actually honored and then work you carried out, including weather proofing or insulation is still useful, nonetheless there are many things you can do to ensure your home is as comfortable as practical.

Adhere to techniques mentioned above, and………….

Acquire far better and efficient home heating if possible.

Be sure your loft or crawlspace is actually well insulated (Presently there are economic grants or loans and low interest lending options that are offered for the elderly and those on a small revenue to help you buy this)

Insulation for external surfaces

Insulating material can be put on to the internal or outdoor walls of your home, however for finest weatherproof and insulation, and in the event that your own home doesn’t have a cavity wall, we’d highly recommend the outside walls being protected.

Once the insulation wall covering is applied to the exterior walls of the property by professionals, the team put on a weatherproof wall coating, possibly through render or with a spray applied technique, such as the British NEVER PAINT AGAIN wall coating process.

What is external Wall insulation?

Exterior wall insulation is really a coating of materials, sometimes boards or sometimes insulated render, put on the external walls of the house. This could certainly furthermore take the form of cladding, or brick slips, insulated panels which, when attached to the place, can make it appear as if the home has a completely new brick wall. This is usually utilized on residences with solid walls without any cavity.

Once thing to consider could be the width of the external insulation and the appearance of your home. Profiles cover anything from 300mm to 600mm and they’re going to obviously protrude outwards somewhat therefore it is vital that you select an outside insulation program that is pleasing to the home, whilst still doing the job of insulating the walls and not letting heat escape.

The thickness of the external wall insulation often depends upon the degree of insulation expected.

Specially cold houses might call for the thickest type of exterior insulation fitted, to maximise the effectiveness of the insulation also to drastically limit the amount of warmth lost via the wall.

A good way of cutting expenses is to combine with this other insulation, including attic room insulation that is simply fitted, very low-priced, and brings great benefits rapidly.

If the house offers cavity walls then you can certainly have a business install cavity wall insulation, through injecting little insulated beads which can become a thermal barrier against freezing.

Change single glazed house windows with completely new UPVC double glazed window units, provided by us here at NPA.

Get interior walls insulating material foil or foam supported plasterboard attached to non cavity “solid” walls.

Consider getting the inside dry lined, setting up a rudimentary cavity and buffer against the cold coming from outdoors.

If residing in an exposed area, especially on a large hill or next to the ocean, why not place bushes or trees across the most uncovered areas of the land or garden, to minimise the impact of cold, biting winds.

Ensure all damp external house walls are given a weather resistant external wall coating, offered by quite a few professional companies including NEVER PAINT AGAIN UK. Exterior wallcoatings not only look good, they stop damp as well as the damaging results of finding yourself in a moist property plus they are maintenance free.

To find out more about solid wall padding, or even regarding exterior wall coatings on the residence in lieu of normal paints, make contact with NEVER PAINT AGAIN UK immediately on (0800) 970 4928 or explore their internet site.

What Is The Importance Of Concrete Resurfacing?

Monday, November 14th, 2011

For home owners or building managers, concrete resurfacing is imperative to maintaining the structural integrity of a house or building. Concrete resurfacing can be defined as the application of an overlay composed of either a modified polymer or thin cement based onto the top of an existing concrete surface. It enables a spectacular brand new surface at a much reduced cost so it is a popular and important building upkeep project. Especially when compared to the cost of putting up a new concrete. Concrete resurfacing is not a new concept in home and building maintenance and has also been gaining popularity in both commercials and public highways work projects. When a concrete surface is beginning to look worn out or dirty it affects the appearance of a building. Concrete resurfacing is a project which will make your concrete look amazing at very affordable costs. There are many reasons as to why having concrete resurfacing done is a wise decision.

Concrete resurfacing is important for those who want to maintain the integrity of a structure. If not maintained and looked after concrete can start to fall apart. If this is not taken care of it is possible that a building is even structurally affected. Applying the concrete resurfacing protects and preserves the surface which helps to avoid possible cracks and water intrusions. The basic point behind the need to maintain concrete surfaces is based on the fact that the surface does not lose strength or start to fall apart. This is all a crucial safety issue too.

Resurfacing can be done both in the interior and exterior of your home. There are a wide rage of colors and designs including styles that are traditional or more modern finishes that home owners have to chose from. Options vary from elegant and stylish sandstone finishes to the look of cozy bricks as well as the traditional paved look and at a much-reduced cost. Depending on the design chosen, your home will look rejuvenated or even have a brand new look which will greatly enhance your property’s look.

Another important feature of resurfacing lies in the fact that it is cost effective when compared to getting new concrete surfaces for your property. The project is much less expensive for homeowners since they do not have to remove the old concrete and replace it with another floor surface. To replace a floor or driveway involves many labour intensive steps. Breaking up and removing the original floor, cleaning and preparing the floor for the new concrete and finally the laying done of the new floor. Each step is messy, takes time and is expensive to have done.

Concrete resurfacing is a gateway to increasing the value of your property. This becomes even more vital for those who are planning on selling their home and don’t want to incur renovations costs. It has therefore become important for all homeowners considering selling their property and wanting that property to be in elegant shape and at a high value.

Concrete Your Way offers the highest quality concrete polishing and concrete resurfacing services. Your one stop solution for decorative concrete and other concrete services by the best concrete contractors.
