How to Find the Right Micro Fiber Cloth For You

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

When cleaning dust, dirt, liquids, or oils off of a surface, micro fiber cloths are one of the best choices. The blend of poly-amide and polyester are assembled in a manner that traps a variety of particles inside the micro fibers. This makes the cloth very efficient in its use as a cleaning material if it is partnered with the proper knitting process.

Micro fiber cloths are very absorbent. These cloths are perfect for cleaning because they can absorb more than they weigh. However, it’s important to know that they are more expensive than disposable paper towel cloths and regular mops.

To find the best cloth, there are several factors that must be taken into consideration. These factors include what surfaces the cloth will clean, the number of different surfaces, and the cost of the cloth itself. The surfaces the cloth will be used to clean is important to keep in mind so that the proper size can be purchased. The number of different surfaces is also important because it is counterproductive to have only one cloth for a large number of surfaces. Keeping the types of surfaces as well as the number will help to determine how many of which type of micro fiber cloth is needed. Finally, the cost of the cloth itself comes into play, simply because the price is generally more than one would expect to pay for a cloth.

In the end, you may find that the purchase of these clothes is the most effective from a cost point of view. There is no need to continue purchasing disposable cloths that are only used once before they must be discarded. Micro fiber cloths can be washed and reused again and again.

Cleaning of these cloths is properly done using mild soap and warm water. Avoid the use of bleach, fabric softeners or harsh detergents when cleaning the cloths. These products tend to clog the fibers and make them less effective at cleaning. Cloths will last longer when cared for properly. Most good quality micro fiber cloths cam be cleaned and reused over three hundred times before they lose the ability to trap agents from the surface.

There are cleaning cloths out there that are marked as being made with micro fibers when they are not. Always make sure that if you want the full performance of a micro fiber cloth, you buy an authentic brand, instead of a knockoff. Most reputable cleaning stores should carry clothes that do the job fine.

Information For Cleaning A Steam Iron Properly

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Frequent use of steam iron exposes them to wear and dirt which if left unattended to for sometime will affect the performance of the iron. Under the correct maintenance, the iron can last for a considerable long period of time thus, saving the user a significant amount of money. The safety of the user is also guaranteed when using a well maintained iron.

To know that it is time to clean the iron, its inefficiency will be reflected during the ironing process. The iron may overheat irregularly burning your fabrics or fail to rise to the set temperature. A dirty iron will leave stains and a foul smell on the ironed items. Before cleaning the iron, read through the manufacturer’s manual. This will help you familiarize yourself with the various components of the iron. It also gives information on what parts can be removed and tips on how to handle and clean each component.

The casing that is in most cases plastic does not pose any real cleaning challenge. It can be easily wiped clean with a wet cloth. Take care not to squeeze water through the joints into the internal circuit. This cleanup can be done regularly as it is less demanding.

A solution of vinegar diluted with an equal volume of water is suitable for cleaning the steam generator of the iron. Vinegar is good at dissolving the odors. Use distilled water as it is free from the common dissolved minerals in tap water which may settle on the iron components. Set the iron at its maximum temperature and let it steam for a moment before draining it. Rinse the tank by going over the process again but now with pure water.

The next important part of the iron that requires careful cleaning is the sole plate. The sole plate is likely to build up cloths and fabrics over time which can clog the iron or leave spots on your clothes after ironing. To clean a cold iron, use a cloth or sponge dipped in cleaning solution. Avoid using paper towels or abrasive pads that my cause permanent scratches on the iron.

Sometimes the dirt is as a result of a build up of burnt fabric and may require harder solvents such as vinegar to clean. Dab over the stain with vinegar and try to rub it off after a few minutes. Do not be tempted to use a sharp object to remove the patch, it may cause severe abrasions on the surface.

Wax related stains and dirt can be easily removed for by heating the iron until the wax melts, then wipe it off by ironing on an absorbent paper. Use ammonia to dissolve and clean oil stains on the iron surface. Soak an absorbent cloth in ammonia and iron over it until the stain disappears.

The steam vents in steam irons are prone to blockages and extra care is required while unblocking them. Hard materials will scratch the tubes and this may tear them. Therefore, a soft material is recommended. Partial blockages can be dislodged using the heating up the iron and steaming it out in a continuous stream. Maintain a well insulated power cord always.

Tips For Picking A Sewing Machine

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Picking out a sewing machine today is very different from machines in the past. As technology continues to change and advance every field and every market, the sewing market has managed to keep up with plenty of developments of its own. The following tips are designed to orient you as to what is on the market today and how you can find the perfect machine for your sewing needs.

For instance, you will find it more difficult to find an older style manual sewing machine on today’s market. This is because most consumers are now demanding electronic models which have a much stronger power source and are easier to operate. Your first decision when entering the market is whether you really want a more basic machine, or if you want to explore how technology has changed the world of sewing with a more advanced machine.

You also have to take into consideration the type of projects you will mostly be using this machine for. If you are going to be doing very simply projects or if the machine will be used by children just starting to learn, chances are you will not have a real use for the more advanced features currently on the market. On the other hand, if you want to use the machine for more creative purposes or for crafts, you may want some advanced features.

For instance, many people enjoy machines that come equipped with various types of foot pedal attachments which change the actual stitching style the machine is capable of producing. Other consumers are enjoying machines that come with digital viewing windows and the capability to zoom in on the project and see every stitch without straining.

Machines that come with built-in stitches and other programmable features are also in hot demand today. These include machines that double as embroidery machines, those that have hundreds of stitches pre-programmed into highly detailed digital controls, and even computerized machines that can connect up with your computer to access more detailed stitches and even pattern guides.

There is a large selection as far as price range and features offered on today’s market. The more advanced features a machine includes, the more you can expect the retail price to be. The market ranges from very basic machines and mini machines that are in the lower price range to loaded machines with huge price tags. The bulk of the machines today fall somewhere in between and offer a select variety of advanced features without offering everything under the sun.

Rather than purchasing a top of the line machine that you will never actually half of the features on, check into each feature on each machine that catches you eye. Ask yourself honestly how many of those features you will make use of on a regular basis.

When you try to select a sewing machine in today’s market, you have to take the time to learn what features are available on what models and what the price ranges tend to be. This will allow you to control expense while still getting the best machine for your regular sewing needs. If you aren’t familiar with the market you may end up shelling out a high price for more features than you will ever actually use.

Using Steam Iron

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Steam ironing is a process in which wrinkles are removed from fabric using super heated steam. This appliance is very light and safe to handle so that even a small child can work with it. This is one of the advanced technologies used nowadays. The main contribution of this technology to individuals is to make them well looked, so that others can have a deep glance at them.

The steam iron process and the normal iron process are one and the same; the only difference is that in steam iron process there is a provision for spraying steam. Steam is sprayed over fabric which gives a better look for the fabric after ironing. In this process, wrinkles can be removed by using super heated form of water.

Steam iron process consists of a tank which is used to hold water. Only distilled water is filled in the tank. The tank is provided with heating elements. Water is converted into super heated steam with the help of these heating elements. A number of holes are provided at the bottom of the plate of the steam iron which paves way for the steam to come out of the tank. The fibers in clothes are loosened by making the steam to pass through the fabric. When the user presses the cloth, the wrinkles are smoothened, so the cloth is ironed.

Handheld wand feature uses advanced steam iron systems in which the steam is used to remove the wrinkles from the fabric. This method does not require pressing action of the user. The clouds steam uniformly in a vertically hanging curtain with the help of this handheld feature.

There are various features that can be added to a steam iron to make it more users friendly and to use it with utmost ease. Advanced technologies are in practice with which one can control the level of steam that is applied to the fabric depending upon the condition of the fabric that is used. There are some models which will have only two option, that is steam on or off, whether to use steam or not.

The operation of this appliance does not require special mechanisms. It requires only a dialing mechanism. The intensity of steam iron varies depending upon the heat produced by the heater elements. The steam intensity produced by the steam iron can be varied or adjusted with the help if this dialing mechanism. Many famous companies competing in market such as Philips, Bajaj etc provide guarantee for most of their products. People are interested to buy the products only if the producers provide guarantee. It is up to the wish of the users to purchase the products.

In no way the fabrics are spoiled by steam. The steam does not remove the paint of metal buttons that are attached to the clothes and fabrics. It also does not melt the plastic buttons. The unique characteristics of steam iron such as light weight and compactness makes it easy for us to carry. The ordinary steam iron is not Teflon made, whereas the bottom of the original steam iron is Teflon made which are a little bit costlier than ordinary ones.

If you are a very good user of cotton clothes or cotton blended ones, then steam iron is the best method to use as it irons while spraying water on the clothes. Curtains and quilts require generous supply of steam. In this way steam iron is very useful.

Simple Techniques To Look After A Steam Iron

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

When it comes to clothes there is ironing, and then there is steam ironing. When one thinks of steam an image of Laundromats and dry cleaners comes up with plenty of white sheets around and again plenty of steam. Steam is of course the best way to get rid of wrinkles and this is done with the use of a steam iron.

A steam iron is basically a modified regular flat iron that can produce steam through vents under the plate. Its ability to produce steam makes it the more effective in taking out wrinkles, particularly on cotton fabrics. With a steam iron it is much more difficult to scorch or burn the cloth since the steam acts as a protective layer between the hot plate and the item to be ironed. Thus having a good one can wipe out most of the traditional worries like burning the cloth for example.

Interestingly getting rid of wrinkles has been a matter of scientific research and inquiry. It has been researched that polymer bonds exist that cause fabric to wrinkle. Steam is one of the proven methods to break down the polymer bonds and thus get rid of wrinkling much more efficiently.

Many steam irons are out in the market today. Different styles, colors and likewise designs to choose from. One of the important considerations of course is the availability of a self cleaner on the steam iron. Amazingly enough some steam irons do not have this feature.

The important part of owning a steam iron is its maintenance. Over time, dirt and material will build inside the iron due to deposits that may accrue from the water. This may take some time to clean and can be painstaking. Some steam irons however do have a self cleaning system that can be activated by just pushing a button.

Most important to clean are the steam vents on the iron. How efficient and how well it takes out wrinkles fully depends on the cleanliness of these vents. Dirty and clogged vents will cause scorching on fabric since uneven dispersal of steam will happen.

To prevent steam vent clogging it is important to clean it every few days. This can be done by cleaning the metal areas with a solution of vinegar and salt mixed in equal proportions using a clean cloth. To make the solution more effective, one may add some baking soda to the solution for more cleaning power.

For direct and intensive cleaning of the steam vents, it can be done through the use of a pipe cleaner or a cotton swab that has been previously dipped in a detergent solution. Passing the swab or the pipe cleaner through the vents carefully and vigorously should dislodge dirt and debris which may cause blockage. Further clogging and build up in the vents can be avoided by emptying the reservoir of excess water when not in use. In so doing, sedimentation and later on rust can be avoided due to stagnant water.

An Introduction About Steam Iron

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

If you are one of those people who iron using the steam iron frequently and never quite bother to take care of your iron, then there is a high chance that the iron will get clogged someday. When this happens, do not be tempted to throw away the iron because you can solve the problem yourself. All you need is distilled water, vinegar, baking soda, and soft cloth.

A steam iron removes the wrinkles, fold marks or creases from almost all types of fabric by using the steam, heat and weight. However, let us first get to know the regular features of a steam iron. Most steam irons will come in with these essential features i.e. a thermostat, a setting for different types of fabric (silk, polyester, wool etc), a water chamber, and some also might have the anti-burn control.

Now that you have the solution ready, you can move on to the next step. Using a small funnel to avoid messy water spills, pour the solution into the water chamber of the iron. Then, let the iron to start steaming for 4 to 5 minutes. This is to give the solution the time to collect’ the materials that are clogging your steam. Remember to leave your iron in an upright position unless you want your house to be filled with corrosive mess since the solution is acidic.

Some may feel that steam ironing is fussy because they have to fill the water chamber before using it. Remember, we do not have to refill the water chamber every single time that we use the iron unless you iron big loads of garments frequently. Use the water indicator to guide yourself on when you need to refill the water.

If you want to use the steam iron, get the real steam iron and not the dry iron with steam ironing option. This is because you will not get the same result. Some of the dry iron-steam iron combos can only produce steams if the iron is held flat on the ironing board. If you are a forgetful person then you accidentally left the iron vertically, you might end up with a steamless steam iron and also an angry heart.

In terms of maintenance, we must ultimately remember that we need to take care of steam iron just as we will with the dry iron. First, make sure that nothing is clogging the pores of your iron. Use a toothpick to pick the clogs from inside. If the clogs are hard to remove, use a solution of vinegar and water. Pour it into the water chamber and let the iron to steam. After 5 minutes, pour out the remaining solution and scrape the inside of your iron.

It is a good habit to do the cleaning steps for at least once every 3-4 months so that you can avoid having your iron to be clogged. This does not only saving your time from cleaning, it will also give you a finer ironing result.

Finally, even if you want to make sure that your iron is not going to be clogged, do not use this method more than two times in a month since it will cause your iron to be overused and hence, reducing its lifespan. Do not take the easy way by using industrial cleaner as this will damage your unit and needing you to buy a new one.

Kristine Taylor enjoys writing steam iron reviews and guide articles on steam irons. She uses the best iron for her weekly chore of ironing and finds that having the best steam iron can help save a lot of time.

Don’t You Just Love The Washing Machine

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

With all the technology that surrounds us, do you ever feel like you are being eaten alive? Televisions have gotten so big, and so loud, you can live two miles from your neighbors and they would know what you watch for the evening. Cellular phones are so prevalent, even five year old children carry them to keep in touch with their school companions! Even your washing machine now has so many buttons, and settings, you may feel you need a degree in mechanics just to get the first load done!

Daddy was never one to joke around. He woke with the chickens and did not go to bed until the stars were out. He was just a no nonsense type of man, and his work reflected the way he felt. My farmed and worked hard every day to provide the basic needs of his family. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and never expected anything in return.

Momma did not have a paying job, unless you include all the kisses and hugs we gave her for doing things for us. She had to make three meals a day, from scratch and that meant she had to get up before her family, and go to bed after her family. I never saw anyone work harder than my father, except of course, my momma.

Wash day was not one day a week, it was every day of the week. Along with the chores of cooking, cleaning, canning, sewing, baby sitting, garden tending, and hundreds of other tasks, momma was doing laundry, by hand, no less. She was not one to complain, and would often sing as she made “music” with the rasping sounds her knuckles made against the wash board, as she scrubbed out the grime from our clothes.

The harsh lye soap would dry out my mother’s hands terribly, and her hands would crack and bleed from the daily abuse. Still, she was at her wash bin every day never calling in sick, or taking a day off. Even when her body was feeling strained because she had caught the flu, momma never wavered in doing what she felt she had to do for her family.

It thrilled my heart so much, when I realized that daddy had spent some of his money to buy momma a gift. This gift was not brand new, but it was new to momma, just the same. He hollered for momma, as he jumped out of his truck, and the present was in the back side of the vehicle.

Loaded on the back of daddy’s truck, was a used, wringer clothes washer. It was not the prettiest thing, as a matter of fact, it really was quite ugly. But, when it was plugged in, the “song” it sang made my mother’s eyes fill with tears. She was so excited she hugged daddy tightly, not remembering just how dirty he was.

I am now a grandparent, and I am so thankful for that sweet memory. Who would have ever thought that a washing machine could bring such happiness? It is funny with all the technology we have today, I remember such a simple time of life.
