Time management is one of the most important skills which you will need in order to effectively manage your home based business, yet it is one of the least mastered skills. This article will cover some of the things which we as home based business owners should be doing regularly.
To become more efficient with your time, here are some things which you must start doing.
1) Stop associating with that which consumes your time, and gives you no benefit. I am not only talking about your friend who wants to go for the early bird happy hour at two o’clock in the afternoon, I am also talking about the things which interrupt your work throughout the day. Cutting the following wasters of time out of your day is essential to time management:
a) Social Media Websites: These venues are addictive. The solution is to stay away. However, by no means should you spend more than half an hour on one of these websites each day for personal matters.
b) Personal Phone Calls: If the phone rings, and you pick it up in excess of five times per day for personal matters, then you are giving up efficiency in your work process. Any unnecessary interruption completely takes you away from your train of thought. This in turn adversely affects your productivity.
c) Television: The boob tube must be limited for you to achieve ultimate control over your time. My recommendation is thirty minutes per day, especially if you are not getting all the things done you need or want to. If you have a DVR, you can record whatever you want to watch, and skip through the commercials in order to save time.
2) Put a list of the most important things in your day to day life, then start doing those things. One of the most important aspects of time management is putting a schedule together from most important to not as important. It is critical that you know what needs to be done each day, and then do it. We are in the digital age. While this make things easier in our work lives, it also leads to more distractions. It is when you allow these distractions to become a priority that your time management is hindered. Look at taking the following steps:
a) Develop a list of tasks which must be completed every day;
b) Recognize how long each task should take, and hold yourself to this time frame;
c) Organize each item in order of importance;
d) Create a strategy which will enable you to achieve each of your goals in the allotted time frame.
3) Every home based business operator must pay a great degree of attention to time management. As soon as you have identified your goals and the actions which must be taken, make sure that you prioritize those actions. If something comes up which is not on your list, unless it is an emergency, action should not be taken on this unscheduled item until all of your scheduled priorities have been completed. If you allow every unscheduled event to take you away from your scheduled tasks, you will never complete your important tasks. This is why so many people think that they need more hours in the day.
