Baby Photography – High Risk, High Reward

Babies can be the most challenging and rewarding portraits to take, but can also be the most frustrating.

Babies tend to sleep, eat and cry a lot and won’t pose in front of the camera but don’t let that put you off photographing them. Do not be discouraged by this – instead, use this challenge to motivate you towards creating the best baby portrait you could.

One of the most important factors in photographing babies is patience and the way you apply child psychology when relating to the baby. One classic example would be babies six months and above, as they are usually shy and defensive in nature. Here’s where you can use child psychology to the best of your capabilities, talking in baby talk, playing with the baby, or even acting like a friendly little baby yourself. The keys of your car can be very effective. But remember, your job is to take a baby portrait; you must be able to react quickly when the infant responds to your entertainment. Shooting a portrait of a newborn baby can be difficult. Because newborn babies are largely stationary, your best is to take headshots of the baby in close-ups. Try using natural light from a bedroom window to add mood to the portrait.

Older babies tend to be more active, even hyperactive, so you have to work quickly. That being said, you have to work as quickly as you can while the baby isn’t tired yet.

This is especially true if you are working with babies seven months old and above. The baby will bore quickly and will not want to stay in the same position.

If you have decided on baby photography as your photography subject of choice, then you should have a) your own studio and b) lots of baby toys for amusement. A light colour background will work best and shoot the portraits in colour and black and white.

Parents may be worried about the affect of studio lights on their baby. You have to confidently explain that strobe lights are safe even for babies. Try to explain this before it becomes a concern.

Don’t ever handle a baby without the parents consent. Of course it is a parent’s instinct to protect their babies and react when someone else holds their small children.

Watch out for the fingers – fingers in the mouth can be attractive but on most occasions they will obscure the face.

One quick and final advice when dealing with baby portraits – always get the parents’ consent before selling the photos to an agency. There is a large market out there for baby pictures but agencies or magazines won’t touch them without the parents consent. You may be tempted to show off what you can do on baby portraits, and while that is all well and good, you should also put proper child care at a premium when shooting these photos.

How Any Parent Can Take Magical Baby Pictures

Some of the most gratifying pictures to take are definitely those of babies. On the other hand, they are definitely one of the most difficult . Here are some guidelines to assist you capture those valuable moments.

Babies tend to snooze, eat, shriek a lot and won’t pose in front of the camera but don’t let that put you off photographing them. Capturing that perfect moment, first step or remarkable expression, when done right, will be memories for your to hold on to many years from now when they are grown up.

Photographing a newborn baby can be hard. At this age the baby will not be active, so it’s better to focus on close-up head shots. Try using natural light from a room window to add mood to the picture. Taking interesting angles will make the photo more attention-grabbing.

Persistence is the most crucial tip in photographing babies. Lots of patience, together with an understanding of children will help you to take those pictures. 6 month old little ones have a propensity to be quite shy at the start and may need to warm up a little. This is where you have to put yourself in the shoes of your kids and utilize a little bit of psychology. Try having fun with them. Play with them as opposed to being focused on the end outcome of taking the shot.
